Hamalainen and Harri Ehtamo Systems Analysis Laboratory, Helsinki University of Technology ISDG@HUT.FI xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Dear Dynamic Game Theorist, This is the twentysecond issue of the Society's electronic newsletter. The basic minimum work principle in editing this e-letter is that the READERS send important notes and information about symposia, conferences and workshops of dynamic games, as well as abstracts of Ph.D. theses, papers and books, which they want to be included in the newsletter. The format is described below. We hope that no retyping will be needed so please follow the instructions and sample shown below carefully. The news should be concise to keep the newsletter readable. Requests for more complete information about any news item should be directed to its contributor. We appreciate any comments and suggestions that you may have on this e-letter. Looking forward to receiving your news contributions. Happy Summer Time Raimo P. Hamalainen and Harri Ehtamo xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Contributed by the Editors June 17 MODEL FOR NEWS SUBMISSIONS Maximum line length is 72 characters. Place the text between two lines of x:ses. The first line should state "Contributed by" and followed by the contributor's name, in brackets and the date. Then there should be a title line and the text. This info block should be sent to ISDG at HUT.FI xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Contributed by Raimo P. Hamalainen June 17 ISDG Joins the Web ISDG now has a home page in the World Wide Web at http://www.hut.fi/HUT/Systems.Analysis/isdg Currently the pages contain a short description of the society, a list of members, and copies of the past issues of ISDG News. Let us know if you have a homepage of your own so we can link you to the ISDG pages. The conference will consist of a miscellaneous session plus two theme sessions on * Contracts, Organisation, and Regulation * Foundations of Game Theory which will comprise both invited and contributed papers. Prospective contributors are invited to submit an extended abstract of about two pages to the local organisers at the address given below, by 28 February 1997. The abstract format is the following: Author name(s), Institution of paper presenter as mailing address, Title, Abstract, Key words, Jel numbers (where applicable). Authors must state if they wish that their papers be considered for one of the theme sessions. All submitted abstracts will be refereed by the scientific committee. Subsequent announcements will inform about registration and hotel reservation formalities. The organising committee's members are professors Aldo Montesano, Michele Polo and Mario Gilli. Topics of interest are optimal control theory, dynamic programming, differential games, evolutionary games, learning, economic modelling, chaos theory, complex systems and related fields. Theoretical contributions to one of these fields which are relevant to problems from economics or OR/MS are especially welcome but also applied modelling will be covered. The attendance will be limited, and due to the lack of sufficient financial support by private and public organizations a registration fee of ATS 1500.- (approx. US$ 150.-) will be charged. In addition to the scientific program an extensive social program will be organized. If you wish to participate in the Workshop please return the attached form to: ws_vie97@e119ws1.tuwien.ac.at. In the cases you don't have acces to email please contact: Prof. Gustav Feichtinger, Department of Operations Research and Systems Theory, Vienna University of Technology Argentinierstrasse 8/119 A-1040 Vienna, AUSTRIA Fax: +43-1-5054524 Participants who wish to present a paper will be asked also to provide an extended abstract of 20 to 40 lines later. All abstracts will be refereed and accepted for presentation solely on the basis of their merit for the workshop. Each paper will be discussed by an invited discussant. Please help us with the organization of appropriate sections by providing a classification of your talk according to the following scheme: 1 Stochastic optimal control 2 Deterministic optimal control 3 Dynamic programming 4 Differential games 5 Nonlinear dynamic modelling 6 Complex systems and chaos 7 Evolutionary game theory 8 Adaptive learning Some selected contributions will be published in a volume of the A-rated journal 'Annals of Operations Research' dedicated to the workshop. Authors who present a paper at the workshop and intend to submit it to this volume should provide the full paper at the workshop at the latest. All submitted papers will undergo a strict refereeing procedure afterwards. DEADLINES! Return form: May 15, 1996 Abstract submission: August 31, 1996 Author notification: October 31, 1996 Full paper: May 21, 1997 Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions concerning the workshop. Please contact us via email at the address 'ws_vie97@e119ws1.tuwien.ac.at' if possible. We will also provide the latest information concerning the workshop on the world-wide-web. Brams and Alan D. Taylor (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press 1996) Brams and Taylor have written an over-view of various protocols aiming at fair allocation of divisible and indivisible entities. They discuss proportional division protocols for 3- and n-person cases. For the latter, general case, they propose their own protocol which not only results in a proportional allocation but, moreover, leaves no room for envy for the participants. The book also deals with dispute resolution protocols in the tradition of Howard Raiffa. Divorce settlement, proportional representation and the Panama Canal negotiations are among the examples analyzed in the book. A thoroughly enlightening and at times very amusing book. Chapter contents: 1 Proportionality for n=2 2 Proportionality for n > 2; the divisible case 3 Proportionality for n > 2; the indivisible case 4 Envy-freeness and equitability for n=2 5 Applications of the point-allocation procedures 6 Envy-free procedures for n=3 and n=4 7 Envy-free procedures for arbitrary n 8 Divide-the-dollar 9 Fair division by auctions 10 Fair division by elections 11 Conclusions Glossary Bibliography Index xiv + 272 pages Publ. date: 07-MAR-96 Price: œ 14.95 (paper) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx end of isdg e-letter issue no. 22, 17 June 1996
